Overview
The Church of Timios Prodromos, nestled in the heart of the community of Vouni, is a timeless testament to the rich religious history of Cyprus. Situated on a street dedicated to its name, it serves as the main church for the town. With its Byzantine-style architecture, the church once stood at the center of a thriving monastery dedicated to Saint Ioannis Prodromos, attracting a large community of monks. Local tradition holds that during the 14th century, a devastating plague swept through the area, leaving only Vouni unscathed due to the protection of the saint. The church remains a symbol of this resilience and devotion. Its single-aisled design features a sharp central arch and cross doors, while the exterior boasts stone construction and intricately carved stone frames at the three entrances. The monumental stone belfry is a particularly striking feature, adorned with rich decorations. Inside, visitors will be awed by the remarkable hagiographies of the 19th century, preserved for generations to come and protected by the Department of Antiquities.
